Cardiac Surgery

Any surgical procedure involving the heart, performed to correct acquired or congenital defects, replace diseased valves, open or bypass blocked vessels, or graft a prosthesis or a transplant is considered cardiac surgery. The most common types of cardiac operations are those correcting blood supply blockages to the heart muscle (coronary artery bypass surgery ) and operations to repair blocked or leaking heart valves that impair heart pump performance (cardiac valve surgery).

Coronary Artery Bypass

Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) reroutes the blood supply around a blocked section of the artery that supplies the heart vital nutrients to function. During this procedure, surgeons remove healthy blood vessels from another part of the body, such as a leg or the chest wall. They then surgically attach the vessels to the diseased artery in such a way that the blood can flow around the blocked section. CABG has been proven to extend patients lives and lasts longer than stents. The operation generally takes 3- 5 hours and postoperatively the patient is recovered in the Cardiovascular Recovery Unit for 24 hours. Thereafter, the patient will transfer to the Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit for 3-5 days and then be discharged.

Our surgeons have tremendous experience in performing bypass surgery and have been ranked in the top 10% for CABG by the Society of Thoracic Surgery, the national governing body of cardiothoracic surgery for excellent outcomes. We frequently perform multiple arterial grafts to improve long term results and have employed minimally invasive vein harvesting for over 15 years.

Cardiac Valve Surgery

When cardiac valves become blocked or leak excessively they can cause deterioration of heart function leading to congestive heart failure. Replacing or repairing the affected valve can improve cardiac function and result in improved energy and life expectancy. Our team has a vast experience in performing valve operations performing more than 98% of cardiac programs within the US. Experience matters. We present our results related to our valve surgery at national meetings, participate in national trials evaluating new valve technologies and have trained many sites related to our techniques. Experience leads to better outcomes in our patients as can be seen below.

Passion for Valve Repair

Our surgeons are dedicated to employing the latest techniques for valve problems with a large segment of our patients receiving valve repair. Repair results in less complications due to the need for blood thinners and improved long term valve function. We have been performing mitral valve repair for over 25 years and have been repairing aortic valves for over 15 years. Experience counts.

Transcatheter Valve Surgery

Depending on a number of factors, your surgeon may recommend Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) for stenosis or blockage of the aortic valve. TAVR is frequently employed in situations making traditional aortic valve surgery too risky for the patient. We have performed over 200 TAVR operations, serve as a training center for the operation and have presented our data at peer reviewed meetings.

Thoracic Aortic Surgery

Dilation of the aorta in the chest may require emergent, urgent or elective repair. Our team is ready for any aortic repair required including stent grafts, open repairs and complex staged repairs of the entire aorta. Complex aortic root reconstruction with valve sparing have been performed for over 15 years by our team, improving results and lowering late valve related issues.

Surgery for Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal rhythm of the upper cardiac chambers that can occur alone or accompany other heart disorders including coronary artery disease or valve problems. Our surgeons have been treating the condition for over 15 years. We utilize a number of different approaches tailored to the patient and the pathology to treat the atrial fibrillation. We are a recognized national leader in atrial fibrillation surgery having led national trials aimed at treating the condition, being invited to speak and demonstrate the techniques at national and international meetings and publishing and presenting our own research on the topic.
